PECC says 119 remains key route for police and fire reports

Jamaicans who are uncertain about where to report an emergency are being encouraged to call 119, with the Police Emergency Communication Centre described as a central point for receiving information and directing it to the relevant responders.

According to the discussion, persons taking the calls are expected to gather the details and forward them where necessary. The service was described as especially useful in cases involving fire, as information received through 119 is passed on to the fire department.

The transcript said the response depends on the nature of the situation being reported. Calls can range from serious emergencies to minor requests for help, including reports as unusual as a cat stuck in a tree.

In those cases, police may still be asked to assist, depending on what support is needed.
