The St Mary police have opened an investigation into a fatal hit-and-run that left an unidentified man dead on Tuesday night.
The crash occurred about 9:30 p.m. on the Heywood Hall main road, close to the Hampstead entrance in the parish. Early information reaching investigators is that the man, who police believe may have been of unsound mind, was travelling on foot when an unknown vehicle struck him.
Commanding Officer for the St Mary Police Division Anthony Wallace said the motorist did not remain at the scene and the injured pedestrian was left in the road. He said the man was wearing a light blue T-shirt and dark-coloured shorts.
The victim was transported to Port Maria Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Police are asking anyone who can assist in identifying the vehicle or the driver to contact the Port Maria Police. The probe remains active, and the St Mary police are again encouraging both drivers and pedestrians to use the roadways with greater care.
