Phenomenal Power Scores Mild Upset in Sixth Diamond Mile

Phenomenal Power, sent off at 9-1 under apprentice Taj Jacquie for trainer Adrian Prince, produced a mild upset to take the sixth running of the Grade One Diamond Mile on Saturday, as the $10 million feature returned to Jamaica's racing calendar after a six-year break.

Thirteen horses contested the mile. Legacy Isle, Pack Plays and Phenomenal Power shared the early lead before Phenomenal Power seized control turning for home. Down the stretch, Legacy Isle drifted right under pressure while Gulfondo tried to close. Phenomenal Power opened clear daylight and held on to beat Gulfondo, with Ball of the Flies third and Royal Puppies next.

The three-year-old Derby colt — one of three winners on the card for Jacquie — stopped the clock in 1:34.4, just a fifth of a second outside the track record. The margin at the wire was a length. Saturday's success also locked in automatic qualification for the fifth running of the Mouttet Mile in December.

Elsewhere on the programme, last year's most improved trainer, Peter John Parsard, saddled four winners. Former champion jockey Reyan Lewis completed a three-timer, two of those successes coming for Parsard.
