PNP Faces Heightened Scrutiny After Alleged Voice-Note Leaks

The People's National Party is under growing public examination after voice notes said to involve party members circulated widely, prompting reactions across Jamaica's political scene.

The PNP has not released an official statement on the recordings. On Wednesday, political commentator Kevin O'Brien Chang addressed the matter on CVM News Lead Story, arguing that the episode points to what he called the party's alleged hypocrisy and calling on civic groups to speak out more firmly against those in authority.

"What you would expect the civil society to say, if this is true, if these names are true, we condemn it. This should not have been," O'Brien Chang said. He contended that private remarks in the material clash with the party's public messaging, which he said has warned that related developments would "destroy Jamaica," while suggesting privately that little could be done even if the country might benefit.

O'Brien Chang also criticised how parish councils are being handled, warning that some current approaches could do more damage than good. He said attempts to work around the councils, including what he described as efforts to sabotage them, amount to an admission that the bodies are deeply flawed. He argued that parish councils have long served as a "feeding tree" for both major parties and that independent civic voices should treat the episode as a signal that reform is overdue.

Separately, he praised National Water Commission ambassador Anthony Anderson, saying the official's standing appears strong even among PNP circles. "General Anderson really has a great reputation even among the PNP and it's great that we have a man in charge of this huge NWC which all of Jamaica can have confidence in," O'Brien Chang said, describing that assessment as his main takeaway from the leaked material.
