1 min readSt. Catherine

Police fatally shot an unidentified man during a targeted operation early Monday in Crescent District, St Catherine, after he allegedly aimed a firearm at officers.

Authorities have not named the dead man. He is described as having a brown complexion, standing about 5ft 10in, dressed in a brown pullover shirt, and wearing his hair in plaits.

Police reports state that around 5 a.m., officers conducting a raid in Crescent for wanted individuals entered a premises and heard noises from what looked like an abandoned motor vehicle. Checks allegedly found the man inside the vehicle, where he reportedly pointed a gun at the lawmen.

Officers returned fire and struck him. He reportedly collapsed while still holding the weapon. A Hi-Point pistol with a magazine holding four rounds was allegedly seized at the scene.

The wounded man was taken to Spanish Town Hospital and pronounced dead there.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has opened an inquiry into the fatal shooting, as is standard practice.
