Police Roll Out Security and Traffic Plans for Dream Weekend in St. James
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) says it is lining up full security and traffic arrangements so Dream Weekend can run safely and smoothly in St. James.
At the St. James Municipal Corporation’s monthly sitting on Thursday, July 9, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for Area 1, Eron Samuels, noted that the series is likely to draw thousands of people into western Jamaica. Guests are expected to stay not only in hotels but also in Airbnb lodgings spread through communities across the parish.
To keep order and protect the public, Mr. Samuels said officers will maintain a robust footprint throughout St. James for the duration of the events. “We will be pushing hard to ensure that our presence is right across the parish, and we are asking for residents to work with us. If you see anything that is untoward, let us know early,” he said.
SSP Samuels added that tip-offs given promptly can help stop trouble before it escalates and support a trouble-free run of the week’s programme. Operators of businesses are also being asked to stay alert and to contact the police at once if anything arises, as part of a shared push to protect people who live in the parish and those visiting.
With heavier road use expected, Mr. Samuels said officers drafted in from outside St. James will reinforce local units to manage traffic and keep festival-goers moving efficiently.
He voiced confidence that backing from residents, commercial interests and festival partners will help deliver a secure, successful stretch of events in the run-up to Jamaica’s Independence celebrations.
Dream Weekend marks its 17th edition this year and will stage in Montego Bay for the first time, following 16 years in Negril. Eight events are planned across five days, with organisers and officials anticipating a strong economic lift across western Jamaica.
