Portia Simpson Miller honoured with Ministry of Labour building naming in Kingston
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security’s head office at 1F North Street in Kingston has been formally named the Portia Simpson Miller Building, in tribute to Jamaica’s first woman prime minister and her long record of advocacy for workers, vulnerable groups and social protection.
The ceremony formed part of Workers’ Week 2026 and the Jamaica Legacy Programme, a Government initiative to preserve the contributions of national leaders. It was the second and final building dedication held that day, following a related ceremony honouring former Labour Minister Lynden Newland.
Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness, Opposition Leader Mark Golding, Labour and Social Security Minister Pearnel Charles Jr., Culture Minister Olivia Grange, Minister of State Donovan Williams, trade union representatives, ministry staff and members of Simpson Miller’s family took part in the event.
Speakers recalled Simpson Miller’s service in the labour portfolio between 1989 and 2000, when she held responsibility at different times for labour, welfare, social security and sport. They highlighted her work on behalf of Jamaican workers, the overseas farm work programme, the Overseas Employment Centre at East Street, the National Insurance Scheme, the National Insurance Fund and labour relations.
Golding said Simpson Miller paid close attention to the dignity and rights of Jamaicans employed overseas and helped strengthen systems that gave them support outside the island. Grange said the former prime minister used her voice for working-class Jamaicans and helped expand social safety nets and international employment opportunities.
Charles described the dedication as a national tribute to a leader whose politics centred on people, workers and families. He said the building would serve as a lasting reminder that public service should improve lives and widen opportunity.
Holness said the honour was fitting because the ministry deals directly with work, dignity, protection and opportunity. He also said the Western Children’s Hospital in St. James, associated with Simpson Miller’s negotiations with China, is to be named in her honour when completed. He added that the former Portia Simpson Miller Square at Three Miles would be recognised through the naming of the overpass and surrounding area, and that a bust and documentary are also being commissioned.
Responding on behalf of the family, grandniece Alicia Magnus said Simpson Miller would have seen the recognition as a tribute not only to herself, but to the many people who worked with her in service to Jamaica.
