Portia Simpson Miller to be honoured at Kingston labour building, western hospital and Three Miles overpass

Kingston

Former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is to be recognised through three public sites: a Labour Ministry building in Kingston, the Western Children’s Hospital in St. James, and the overpass at Three Miles.

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness made the announcement today during the ceremony to rename the Labour Ministry building on North Street.

Holness said placing Simpson Miller’s name on the Kingston property was an appropriate way to acknowledge her service in that portfolio, where her work helped families, expanded job prospects in Jamaica and overseas, and supported children’s education.

He added that although calls have recently been made for the Western Children’s Hospital to bear her name, the Government had already planned to honour Simpson Miller there. Holness said the proposal was also discussed with her family.

The Prime Minister also addressed concerns raised by some residents about the Portia Simpson Miller Square during the Three Miles redevelopment, assuring that the area will be dedicated to the former Prime Minister once the project is finished.
