Portland school bus crash: Vaz shares onboard CCTV after robot taxi collision

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz has made public closed-circuit television from Monday's crash involving an alleged illegal taxi and a government rural school bus in Portland, stating that 15 people were placed in danger.

In a post on his official Instagram account on Tuesday, Vaz said cameras fitted inside the bus recorded the point of impact involving both the driver and a student on board.

"The buses are built for the protection of our students," Vaz wrote. He also said driver logs and the CCTV material would be passed to the police.

The collision took place on Monday morning near Tom's Hope in the Rio Grande Valley area of Portland. Authorities say an alleged robot taxi was moving at high speed around a bend when it struck the school bus after the bus operator braked to avoid a crash.

The taxi operator and students travelling in that vehicle were taken to Port Antonio Hospital and received treatment for minor cuts and bruises. None of the seven people aboard the school bus were reported hurt.

Vaz said the episode supported the monitoring and security arrangements within the Rural School Bus System. "Using technology, we are able to better secure the students and the buses."

"Well thinking Jamaicans are right to be outraged by the continued lawlessness and reckless driving on the roads," he wrote. "Had this been another bus the outcome could have been very very different."
