Jamaica’s coach said the Reggae Boyz left the Unity Cup final against Nigeria disappointed, but with signs that a younger national squad can serve the country in years ahead.

Speaking at the post-match press conference after Jamaica’s defeat to Nigeria in the Unity Cup 2026 final, the coach said the team had arrived wanting to win the competition. He said, however, that this was the youngest Jamaica national squad he had worked with, and that the group became even younger after the opening match when some players withdrew for personal reasons.

Asked about Jamaica losing again to Nigeria in a final, the coach said the project was not built around revenge. The focus, he said, was on shaping a team for the future.

He pointed to inexperience as the main gap between the teams, particularly in the second half. The coach said Jamaica made costly errors and noted that Nigeria’s goals came from restart situations, including a long throw, another throw that was not defended properly, and pressure on Jamaica while playing out from the back.

The coach said he had no regret about bringing a less experienced squad to the tournament because the staff had identified “four or five players” who could help Jamaica going forward. He said finding that many potential contributors made the trip worthwhile.

He also said Jamaica were trying to make the national set-up more accessible to younger players, including those from academies, both locally and overseas. After failing in objectives such as World Cup qualification, he said it was time to assess the available talent and build from there.

The coach thanked Jamaican supporters who turned out in large numbers and continued to encourage the team even after the result went against them. He said the players appreciated that backing and promised the fans that Jamaica would be better next time.

Asked what young footballers need to reach the national team, he said they must play at a strong club level, perform consistently, and trust that selectors will find them.
