Serena Williams will go no further in the Queen's Club doubles draw after Victoria Mboko, her partner, left the event because of a left knee injury.
Williams and Mboko were due to play their quarter-final on Thursday, but the Canadian was unable to continue in the tournament. Mboko had taken a heavy fall in her singles match on Wednesday and later retired from that encounter.
Williams, 44, had marked her first competitive tennis appearance in almost four years on Tuesday. Alongside the 19-year-old Mboko, she opened with a strong win, beating third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 7-6, 6-2.
The exit cuts short a notable return outing for Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion.
