Repairs to a damaged stretch of Malvern Road in Christiana, Manchester, are expected to wrap up by mid-July, Mayor of Mandeville Donovan Mitchell has said.

The roadway took a heavy beating when Hurricane Melissa passed in October and finally collapsed in April, leaving part of the route reduced to single-lane traffic. Mitchell is urging residents and other road users to bear with the disruption while crews complete the work.

During a recent site visit with engineers, Mitchell and Christiana division councillor Oneil Bryan said progress on the rehabilitation has been encouraging. They estimate the project could be finished within another month to a month and a half.

Local resident David welcomed the long-awaited fix. "This road, long time it don't fix. So, I appreciate what is going on now," he said.

Officials stressed how vital the route is to daily life in the area. Christiana functions as a commercial centre, but many farmers depend on the road to reach markets and neighbouring districts.

Mitchell said the link serves communities including Graham Farm, Devon and Chudleigh, making it an important artery for the farming belt. "Even though it's a commercial hub, there's a lot of farmers. And this road is a crucial road for the farming community," he said.

Bryan noted that the road feeds directly into the Christiana hub and supports farming communities further downhill. Without it, motorists face a detour of roughly 10 kilometres to reach Christiana town.

"We are expecting to try and finish it early so that persons can traverse this area in a no in no time," Mitchell said, adding that authorities are working to restore normal access as quickly as possible. "We're just asking them to just stay with us, we are just trying to get it ready for them."

The rehabilitation is being carried out at a cost of about $20 million.
