Rikers Island stages World Cup semifinal viewing for well-behaved inmates

Wednesday’s World Cup semifinal drew crowds across New York, and one of the more unusual gatherings happened inside the Rikers Island jail complex. The facility, often associated with crowding and violence, opened a gym at its main intake centre for a match screening.

More than 100 inmates in tan uniforms sat at tables facing a large projected broadcast of England versus Argentina. Balloon displays topped with football-themed decorations were set up around the screen.

Officials said the jail has organised these viewing sessions since the tournament began last month, limited to inmates with strong behaviour records, including at least 30 days without incidents. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani arrived shortly before kickoff, took off his dark jacket, rolled up his white shirt sleeves, and sat with inmates discussing the competition.

At one table, an inmate predicted Argentina would beat England and then meet Spain, after Spain’s win over France the previous day. “You never know,” said Mamdani, who said he supports Morocco. At another table, one inmate told the mayor he was due to be released later that day. “That’s amazing,” Mamdani replied, shaking his hand and patting him on the back before leaving around the 20th minute.

The room reacted loudly when England scored first early in the second half, with cheers from some and frustration from others. Ralph Veal, 53, from Mount Vernon, celebrated as one of the smaller group backing England. In custody since November, he said he was supporting the side because it is his 20-year-old son’s favourite team. “The vibe is real good, you know. I’m sitting at the table with Argentina fans, but it’s all right,” Veal said before England’s goal. “We have a good, a good time, you know, it feels real great, real great. The energy is real positive in here.” Argentina later secured a 2-1 victory.
