Peter Magyar takes office as Hungary PM after vote ends Orban’s 16-year stretch

Hungary installed a new prime minister when Peter Magyar formally took the oath of office, coming nearly four weeks after a parliamentary ballot in which voters replaced Viktor Orban and closed out the outgoing leader’s sixteen-year run at the top.

Magyar, forty-five, steers the centre-right Tisza grouping and pitched himself as an agent of renewal following prolonged economic sluggishness and friction with major partners such as the European Union during the Orban years.

On Saturday, Magyar invited Hungarians to “step through the gate of regime change”. His alliance now enjoys a sweeping mandate, with one hundred forty-one legislators in a chamber of one hundred ninety-nine.

Among the immediate tests are repairing Hungary’s relationship with Brussels, stimulating growth, and managing state finances after, by April, the budget gap had already climbed to nearly three-quarters of the ceiling set for the whole year.

The premier-elect wants an agreement with EU authorities that would free approximately twenty billion United States dollars in payments that remain on hold. Disbursement stopped amid worries about deteriorating human-rights conditions under Orban and weakening judicial safeguards.

Throughout Orban’s premiership, Budapest’s distance from mainstream EU policy widened while links with Moscow strengthened. In the European Council he repeatedly cast vetoes to resist sanctions on Russia and to obstruct assistance for Ukraine.

Commentators describe Magyar’s arrival at the summit of government as striking. Before the opening months of 2024 he barely registered on the national stage, then shot to attention in a bitter public clash with Orban’s Fidesz organisation, though he had once been a visible figure inside that same camp.
