Sangster Airport secures Level 3 carbon accreditation for sustainability work
Sangster International Airport (SIA) has received a formal upgrade to Level 3 in the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme, a leading global standard used to measure how airports manage carbon emissions.
MBJ Airports Limited (MBJ), the airport’s operator, announced the achievement. Under the Level 3 standard, SIA is evaluated on how it draws airlines, ground service providers, tenants and other businesses based at the airport into a joined-up emissions reduction effort. The level moves carbon management beyond the airport operator alone and requires wider participation, tracking and accountability across the airport community.
The announcement came shortly after World Environment Day on June 5, the United Nations’ main platform for promoting worldwide awareness and action around environmental protection. MBJ said the accreditation marks recognition of progress already made, while also reinforcing the sustainability targets that will shape the airport’s development going forward.
Shane Munroe, chief executive officer of MBJ Airports Limited, said the airport’s broad-based approach puts SIA among a smaller group of airports internationally working to advance climate action across their full operating environments.
"This accreditation affirms what our team has worked tirelessly to build – a culture of environmental responsibility that extends into everything that we do. For us, sustainability is a core value that is embedded in how we plan, operate, and partner with every stakeholder at Sangster International Airport. We are proud of what has been achieved, and even more energised about what lies ahead as we continue raising the bar for airport environmental management in the Caribbean and the wider region."
ACI-LAC, Airports Council International – Latin America & Caribbean, also formally recognised the milestone and congratulated MBJ.
"On behalf of ACI-LAC, congratulations to MBJ Airports Limited on the successful upgrade of Sangster International Airport to Level 3 of the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. Reaching Level 3 is a significant achievement, demonstrating the airport’s commitment to engaging stakeholders in the collective effort to reduce carbon emissions," said Francisco M Medela Alonso, industry affairs director at ACI-LAC, in a message to MBJ.
The ACA Level 3 certification is administered by Environmental Minds and adds to SIA’s existing environmental credentials. The airport also has ISO 14001 certification, the internationally accepted Environmental Management Systems standard. MBJ said that certification reflects its structured, standards-based work to reduce the airport’s environmental impact throughout its operations.
According to MBJ, the combined certifications further support SIA’s standing as a regional example for sustainable airport management.
