SDC drives reset of Jamaica's community governance framework

The Social Development Commission (SDC) is moving to rebuild the working relationship between state and non-state actors by placing renewed emphasis on governance and grassroots participation, according to executive director Omar Frith.

Frith spoke to The Gleaner on the sidelines of the Greater St Catherine Governance Conference, held on Wednesday at the Caymanas Golf Club. He said the agency's governance department is leading the push.

"At this junture the SDC is seeking to reset the meaning, we have been focus through our governance department on building capacity of groups and individuals to participate at the community level," he said.

The conference series, mounted in partnership with the Planning Institute of Jamaica, has already travelled to St James, Clarendon, Westmoreland and St Catherine. A final staging is scheduled for Kingston and St Andrew.
