Argentina supporters celebrate comeback and reject late bandwagon fans
Argentina supporters erupted in celebration after their team produced another comeback and advanced to the football final. Fans watching at a market and nearby arcade praised the side’s patience, determination and ability to maintain pressure late in matches.
One man, identified as Ricky and nicknamed “Switchy Switchy”, admitted that his allegiance during the match depended partly on what supporters offered him. He said he originally backed Germany before appearing with both England and Argentina flags. According to Ricky, England supporters bought him water, while Argentina fans promised something more substantial after their team scored.
He explained that he would support whichever group treated him best on the day, adding that his most memorable gift had been a large bag of flour. Despite the teasing over his changing loyalties, Ricky selected Argentina as his preferred side for the final and suggested that another generous offer would strengthen his support.
A more committed Argentina follower said he had backed the team for years and never doubted its ability to recover. He described the players as patient and said their pressure usually intensified after the 70th minute. Even as the match approached its final moments, he maintained faith that the team would continue fighting.
The supporter became emotional during the comeback, explaining that his tears reflected pride in Argentina’s quality and resilience. He identified Lionel Messi as a favourite and said his prediction for the final was driven by his admiration for the Argentine star.
Another fan, dressed in red and white rather than Argentina’s colours, displayed a flag and insisted that people familiar with him already knew his long-standing allegiance. He said Argentina had previously recovered twice, including once after falling two goals behind, which gave him confidence that another turnaround was possible.
Supporters said they would prefer Argentina to score first and sustain its intensity, but accepted that conceding required the team to battle back. They also rejected people who began supporting Argentina only after England’s defeat, arguing that those fans should simply watch the final. One Barcelona supporter said he would still be pleased if a 19-year-old La Masia player earned a World Cup victory, although his first preference remained another Argentina win.
