Skeemers FC capture Northwest futsal crown in St. James
Skeemers FC have booked their place in the final stage of the national futsal and scrimmage championship after winning the Northwest regional tournament at Bayview Turf Club in Freeport, St. James.
The Western Jamaica leg brought together six teams split across two zones. Lucea FC finished first in Zone A on goal difference after each team in the group recorded one win. In Zone B, Skeemers advanced by defeating Reggae Youths and Sandy Bay United.
Skeemers sealed the title with a 4-1 victory over Lucea FC in the final. Zidane Francis scored twice, including the opening goal, while Ojay Myers added another to give Skeemers a 2-0 lead. Philip Banks pulled one back for Lucea, but Dennis Lee restored Skeemers’ two-goal cushion before Francis completed his brace.
The champions also dominated the post-tournament awards. Skeemers received the sportsmanship award, Myers finished as leading scorer, Tajay Calvin was named best goalkeeper, and coach Everett Mullings was selected as top coach. The team will move on to the national championship, scheduled for June 6 at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence in Kingston.
The sports report also highlighted work at Clements Park in Port Maria, where the St. Mary Municipal Corporation used Labour Day to begin improvements at the long-neglected playing field. Chief executive officer Ethlyn Douglas said the project was part of a wider effort to restore the facility and position it for broader community use.
Douglas said the day’s work included planting the national tree, the national flower and shrubs, along with general cleaning, garbage collection and waste separation to support plastic recycling in the community. The Forestry Department donated trees for the exercise, while community members, the Social Development Commission, Tax Administration Jamaica and municipal corporation staff assisted on the ground.
