Captain Romanie Wilson, 33, was raised on March Pen Road in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, and now works as a commercial pilot. Wilson said flying was always his ambition, but the route from humble beginnings to the cockpit took about nine years, included stints abroad, and tested whether the dream would ever materialise.

Wilson is the youngest of four children and grew up with both parents in the household. He described the family as middle class—not wealthy, but not among the poorest either—though harder periods outweighed easier ones. After he completed Jonathan Grant High School, money became his first major obstacle. He recalled long stretches of doubt when he questioned whether aviation would ever be within reach.

He migrated to Canada for a year and a half of flight training while holding three jobs, then married, moved to the United States, and continued instruction. His parents funded a large share of his training, helping him toward his private pilot licence, instrument rating, and commercial licence before that support, especially from his mother, ran out near the end of his commercial qualification. He relied on official loans, borrowing, and his salary to finish. Training he expected to take roughly two and a half years instead took about nine.

Wilson said discipline is the biggest lesson of his career, a value he tries to pass on to his three children. "Listen, man, like you have to do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do," he said. At altitude—sometimes with autopilot on—he said he reflects on how flying is not a right but a hard-earned privilege he believes other pilots can identify with. He also urged others from modest backgrounds that if he could reach his goal, they could too.

Wilson said he came from very humble beginnings and did not have an easy path. He maintained that persistence through hardship can still open doors that once seemed closed.
