David Smith, whom prosecutors identified as the gunman in the killings of Tashonna Patterson and her 10-month-old daughter Sarayah, child of Phillip Powell, is to be sentenced on July 24 after pleading guilty on June 10. He faces two counts each of conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to kidnap, kidnapping, and capital murder. Prosecutor Mevlut Cetin told the court Smith shot Patterson and the infant after receiving a gun from co-accused Briton Blake and sent a photograph of them to Leonardo Bradshaw, accused of masterminding the kidnapping and killings. In March 2024, then Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn said the court would seek the death penalty against Smith. Co-accused Bradshaw, her cousin Roland Balfour, and Bejon Black are scheduled to return on September 17 for a trial-readiness hearing.
In St. Catherine, 84-year-old Spanish Town landlord Albert Thomas pleaded guilty Tuesday before acting Senior Parish Court Judge Janelle Nelson-Gale to assault occasioning bodily harm for throwing hot water on a tenant during an April 21 dispute, burning the man's right hand and leg. Thomas told the court, "Your honor, him throw dirty water upon me about a week before, so me hot up the water and throw it upon him." Sentencing was adjourned to July 21 for a social inquiry report. The judge noted the complainant is seeking $800,000 in compensation but said the medical report does not support that figure.
St. James police have taken three students from schools across the parish into custody over a cyberbullying case involving two girls at Mount Alvernia High School. Investigators have been probing impersonation, defamatory remarks, and serious threats since last year. Senior Superintendent Eron Samuels said the Praed Investigation Unit acted after fresh developments and that statements have been recorded. One parent said a fake page has harassed her daughter since last October, resurfacing in December through WhatsApp groups, and that allegations were recently levelled against the child's father. Another parent said her daughter wants a public apology rather than expulsions. Principal Kean Wyne said the school is supporting the affected students and does not believe Mount Alvernia pupils are behind the campaign.
