A man who used the alias "Ren" was killed by police during a reported shootout in Quarry Hill, Spanish Town, St Catherine, on Friday morning.

According to police, the incident unfolded around 5:30 a.m. when members of the St Catherine North Proactive Investigation Unit and the Area Fugitive Apprehension Team entered the community hunting for gunmen, including the suspect.

Investigators said officers observed two men scaling a fence at the back of a premises. The pair were challenged but allegedly fired at the lawmen.

Police reported that the officers sought cover and returned fire while the gunfire continued. When the exchange ended, one of the men was found with gunshot injuries.

He was transported to Spanish Town Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The victim has been identified only as "Ren", described as a resident of Quarry Hill.

Officers also seized a Taurus pistol equipped with a magazine loaded with three 9mm cartridges.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is now examining the circumstances of the fatal shooting, as it routinely does in cases involving police use of deadly force.
