St George's FC capture Portland FA Major League title at Carter Park
St George's FC, a former Premier League outfit, were crowned Portland Football Association Major League champions after defeating Kensington Sports Club 3-0 in Saturday's final at Carter Park.
The winners broke through in the 37th minute when Jamari Hamilton put them in front. Goalkeeper Randall Huy later stepped up from the penalty spot and converted in the 64th minute, before JJ Anderson completed the scoring three minutes later from close range after a scramble in the area.
After the victory, St George's signalled ambitions beyond the parish competition, with the focus now shifting to the playoffs, a push toward tier two football and, ultimately, a return to the Premier League.
Progressive FC also lifted silverware, retaining the Portland Credit Union under-20 title by beating Wi-Fi United on penalties. That contest was scoreless after 90 minutes before Dante Bryan gave Progressive the lead in the 105th minute. Wi-Fi United responded in the 114th minute, when Keandre Wilson converted a penalty to make it 1-1. With the score unchanged after 120 minutes, Progressive were flawless in the shoot-out and won 5-3.
Wi-Fi United later got the better of Progressive in the under-15 final, winning 2-0 to take that championship. Organisers described the three finals as competitive and said the matches provided a fitting end to a season that began six to seven months earlier, while also helping teams prepare for the upcoming campaign.
