St. James man Orville Cameron left homeless after demolition
A St. James man who recently appealed publicly for assistance is now without shelter after the place where he had been staying was demolished. Orville Cameron, who is ill and visually impaired, said his possessions have been left outside while he searches for somewhere safe to sleep.
Furniture and other personal items were seen piled near the roadside and in a neighbour's yard. Some pieces had been damaged, while others were wet from recent rainfall. Tarpaulin has been used to cover what remains, but Cameron's belongings are still vulnerable to the weather.
Cameron said the demolition was carried out over two visits. According to him, workers came the previous Wednesday and returned on Monday to complete the job. With the building gone, he said he has no clear place to go.
The situation has worsened his already fragile condition. Cameron said he takes medication and has been visited by social workers, but his most urgent need is housing. Standing appeared difficult for him, with swollen feet and a weakened body adding to his distress.
He said the ordeal has left him exhausted and discouraged. Cameron told TVJ that he feels unable to get help wherever he turns, and that he is struggling to cope with being on the street.
Cameron appealed for assistance from the Government, Andrew Wallace and members of the public, saying he needs somewhere to sleep. Persons able to help Orville Cameron with housing or other support were asked to contact 876-792-1091 or 876-418-5412.
