World Cup 2026 panel backs France and host USA as Brazil draw heavy criticism

The second episode of TVJ's Social Side combined on-the-street football challenges with a studio panel reviewing the 2026 FIFA World Cup, producing sharp disagreement over which nations look strongest and which traditional powers may be vulnerable.

In street segments, fans backed Brazil, France, Senegal and Argentina, arguing over squads, naming players and testing flag knowledge. In studio, football enthusiast Crystal joined Maverick and other guests for predictions and analysis.

France emerged as the side most rated as convincing. Kylian Mbappé drew repeated praise: this is his third World Cup, having won the first, finished runner-up in the second and scored a hat-trick in that final. Several guests said the French squad looked focused and dangerous.

Brazil drew the harshest criticism. Multiple voices described the five-time champions as underwhelming, with one prominent Brazil supporter on the panel openly predicting his side could lose.

Argentina stayed in the conversation largely because of Lionel Messi. Guests acknowledged the team has looked slower and less effective without him, though Messi, at 39, still carries expectation after his prior World Cup hat-trick. Some argued the pressure weighs less on him now given his maturity.

Portugal split opinion. Some praised the side as surviving well; others pointed to underwhelming results, including a draw against Colombia. Host nation the United States drew attention as a team rivals might prefer to avoid, with guests citing home advantage, momentum and visible energy.

England and Brazil were named among traditional powers closest to an early exit. Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41, was singled out as facing immense pressure in what may be his last World Cup.

On surprises, guests noted no major first-round shock so far, with most favourites advancing. Spain's opening draw with World Cup debutants Cape Verde was cited as the nearest upset, while Portugal's result against Colombia and Turkey's early elimination — despite being touted as dark horses — also featured. Panel members highlighted that all ten African nations at the tournament failed to reach the second round.

For late penalties, Vinícius Júnior and Mbappé received support, with discussion noting Messi has missed penalties at recent World Cups. Mbappé, 27 and three goals behind Messi's all-time World Cup scoring mark, was tipped to eventually overtake that record.
