Sunrise highlights new court projects, road safety push and Jamaican innovation
CVM Sunrise’s June 12, 2026 broadcast moved across local justice, road safety, public health, education, motorsport and music, with guests and news segments outlining several developments affecting Jamaica.
In the headlines, Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Delroy Chuck announced that four new courthouses are to be built in St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, St. Ann and Trelawny under the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority. He said the facilities are expected to be modern courts offering the range of services required of today’s justice system. The ministry is also looking at public-private partnerships for court infrastructure in Manchester, St. Catherine and Kingston, while the St. Thomas Parish Court is projected to begin operating early in the next fiscal year.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force also reported an intensified public-education effort aimed at keeping road deaths below 300 for the year. As at June 11, the country had recorded 124 road fatalities from 112 fatal crashes. Police said deaths were down 27 per cent and fatal crashes down 26 per cent when compared with the similar period in 2025. Deputy Superintendent Marcus Graham said the campaign is being taken into schools and communities, with particular focus on motorcyclists, pedal cyclists and pedestrians.
World Food Safety Day activities were also highlighted, as the Bureau of Standards Jamaica discussed its school essay and poster competition under the theme focused on preventing leptospirosis and keeping food safe after a storm. The BSJ said it received 277 entries, including 100 posters and 177 essays.
Chain of Hope marked 30 years of work in Jamaica, where it has supported more than 70 medical missions and helped children receive cardiac care. A June 8 to 15 mission at Bustamante Hospital for Children had already completed seven operations, with more expected.
The programme also featured UTech Motorsports Club, whose students restored an old Formula V car as part of preparations for Formula Student competition, and artist Runkus, who discussed his album Supernova.
