Portmore Scotiabank ABM Robbery: An undetermined sum of cash has been stolen from a Scotiabank automated banking machine (ABM) in Portmore, St Catherine, in what investigators believe was a carefully planned operation.
Sources say several men, dressed in black clothing and wearing gloves, drove onto the bank’s compound on Braeton Parkway in a grey Nissan Latio sedan during the weekend.
The men reportedly gained access to the ABM servicing room, where they allegedly used security codes to open four cash safes before removing large sums of money.
Each of the safes is believed to have the capacity to hold more than J$20 million. Sources indicate that only the compartments containing larger denomination Jamaican currency were emptied, along with the compartment holding US currency.
Investigators say there were no signs of forced entry.
Reports indicate that the servicing room is secured by what has been described as a standard lock, with access reportedly restricted to specialist personnel from security courier company Beryllium, a subsidiary of Guardsman Group.
The theft is believed to have occurred sometime between 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and 8:43 a.m. on Sunday.
According to sources, the breach was discovered during a routine patrol when an officer noticed that the servicing room door had been left slightly open, propped ajar with a small stone.
Police have launched an investigation into the multimillion-dollar heist. Authorities have not yet disclosed the amount of cash stolen, and no arrests have been reported.
