Tiana Frazer named 2025 Dr Barry Wint Memorial Scholarship recipient
Tiana Frazer, a final-year nursing student, has been highlighted as the 2025 recipient of the Dr Barry Wint Memorial Scholarship, with the award helping to reduce the financial strain on her family as she moves through her last year of study.
In the interview, Frazer said the scholarship has made a major difference because it allows her to spend more time concentrating on school rather than worrying about how her expenses will be covered. She said the support is especially important as she balances clinical duties, laboratory work and regular classes in her fourth year.
Frazer explained that her parents have been the main providers for her education and had been using much of their income to support her. With the scholarship now in place, she said the burden has eased for both her and her family. According to Frazer, her parents still assist her, but the amount they now have to provide is less than before, and that has brought some relief to the household.
She also spoke about why she chose nursing, saying she has always had a deep interest in caring for people. Frazer said nurses support patients in ways many other professions do not, and described the role as being a kind of home away from home for people who arrive at hospital feeling sad, worried or overwhelmed by illness. She said the work involves helping patients with their needs, listening to their concerns and building relationships that can support their recovery.
The segment also pointed to the continued demand within the healthcare sector, particularly for nursing, while praising Frazer for staying committed to the profession.
Offering advice to others on the same path, Frazer said nursing school is challenging, but students can succeed if they remain determined, find the right support system and make time to study.
