Fatal Huddersfield house blaze under St Mary police investigation

1 min readSt. Mary

St Mary police have opened an inquiry into how a man died after a dwelling caught fire in Huddersfield on Monday.

The victim has been named as Anthony Nelson, a 34-year-old unemployed man who lived in Huddersfield.

St Mary officers reported that around 4:45 a.m., people living nearby noticed smoke rising from part of the house and summoned the Jamaica Fire Brigade together with the police.

Before help reached the scene, neighbours tried to force their way inside and put out the flames themselves. Police said those attempts failed.

Crews from the Port Maria Fire Brigade then brought the fire under control.

"During cooling-down operations, the body of Nelson was discovered inside the premises with severe burn injuries," said Superintendent Anthony Wallace, head of the St Mary Police Division.

Wallace said the Area Two Technical Services Division examined the site, after which the body was taken away for a post-mortem examination to establish how he died. The inquiry remains active.
