TODSS rejects claims of islandwide taxi withdrawal
The Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services has denied claims that public passenger vehicle operators planned to withdraw service or stage a demonstration today.
The group said reports circulating on social media about an islandwide taxi protest were inaccurate. Those messages suggested operators would take action over issues affecting the transport sector.
TODSS president Egeton Newman rejected the claims, describing the information being shared as false and misleading. He said the notice being circulated had no clear source or authority behind it.
"There is no name, no stamp, no signature. Nobody knows where it is coming from and there is absolutely nowhere where it is going," Newman said.
He urged commuters to treat Tuesday, May 26, as a normal operating day for public transportation.
Newman said the organisation has an understanding with the Government of Jamaica, through the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Finance, that the parties will get an update on June 1 about the outstanding balance of a 16 per cent payment owed to operators for nearly three years.
