Ministers and transport groups open fare talks at Half-Way-Tree centre

Talks on public transport fares began today at the Transport Centre in Half-Way-Tree, St Andrew, drawing senior government figures and industry representatives into the same room.
The session started at 10 a.m. Finance and Public Service Minister Fayval Williams and Transport Minister Daryl Vaz said they intend to continue discussions with transport operator groups and the Transport Authority.
Operators used the meeting to press again for a fare increase they describe as long overdue. They point to sharply higher global fuel prices that are now feeding through to costs in Jamaica.
Minister Vaz said the Government understands the pressure on commuters while recognising the strain on operators. He urged calm and patience as officials try to work out a balanced approach.
