Thirty-one singers arrived on June 28 hoping to secure one of ten places on Jamaica Gospel Star 2026, the national gospel talent competition set to launch its new season.

The preview programme offered a look at the process that precedes the main competition. For each participant, that path started with a decision to step forward in faith. Several described intense nerves before facing the panel, with one noting sweaty palms and another calling the experience nerve-racking. Others said they tried to stay calm, trust divine guidance, and focus on worship rather than the pressure in the room.

Judges heard the hopefuls one by one, weighing musical ability against authenticity of delivery. One evaluator made clear that technical skill alone would not suffice. "If I don't believe what you are singing, no matter how good you are musically, you can't pass for me," the judge said.

Performances drew a range of responses from the panel. Contestants sang gospel selections that included themes of perseverance, resurrection, worship, and redemption. Judges praised strong storytelling, creative presentation, vocal control, and what one described as believability on stage. One performer earned particular commendation for delivery, presence, and overall presentation. Another received approval after a rendition associated with the hymn "It Is Well With My Soul," with a judge declaring it a yes.

After the auditions, one judge noted that the male contestants had stood out for their tone, control, creativity, and authenticity. Participants leaving the room described mixed feelings — relief alongside lingering adrenaline — and reflected on whether their performances had honoured God.

Following careful consideration, ten contestants were chosen to move forward. Organisers framed the selected voices as sharing one purpose: to glorify God through music as the season ahead takes shape.
