Trelawny girl, 10, found slain as suspected killer dies in mob attack
The partially clothed body of 10-year-old Ashtanai Coke, known as A Kaydra, was recovered on a dirt path among bushes in the Trelawny district near Troy, Trelawny, on Tuesday evening. Police reported her throat had been cut.
Authorities said a crowd then set upon a man identified as Delroy Coke, who had been accused of raping and murdering the child, and he died in the assault. His father was also beaten; his condition was not disclosed.
Separately, the opposition People's National Party is pressing Cabinet minister Juliet Cuthbert Flynn to say whether she is, or has been, under Integrity Commission scrutiny. In a post on X, Cuthbert Flynn said that months earlier Integrity Commission staff went to the gated community where she lives and, on her account, would not tell security at the entrance why they were there.
Several police officers are also facing internal discipline for breaches that include negligence tied to the escape of accused killer Raymond Boxer Shaw from the Kingston Central Police lock-up nearly four years ago, and an unprofessional exchange with Germany's ambassador to Jamaica. Two officers received severe reprimands, while four others had pay cut by between 10 days' wages and a quarter of their salaries for stretches of up to four months.
In sport, Mount Pleasant Football Academy supplied more players from a Jamaican club than any other for the coming Concacaf Men's Under-20 Championship. Seven of its athletes made the cut — two for Jamaica and five for Haiti.
At midday currency trading, one US dollar sold for J$159.60, the British pound for J$216.66, and the Canadian dollar for J$115.70.
Thursday's forecast calls for partly cloudy skies in the morning over eastern parishes and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere, with widely scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and windy weather across eastern and south-central parishes.
