Trelawny Scheemaz win first Northwest futsal crown in Montego Bay

Trelawny Scheemaz are the first champions of the National Futsal Championship North West Region, after a 4-1 win over Lucea United FC at Bayside Field Club in Freeport, Montego Bay, on Saturday.
The tournament was organised by Jamaica Futsal and Scrimmage Association Limited (JFSA), which said the new regional contest is part of a wider effort to build futsal across the island.
“It is the first time it's happening in Jamaica. However, we want to replicate this across the 14 parishes so each FA runs their own competition, just like the Major, Super, and Tier Two [leagues],” tournament coordinator Rojay Stewart said.
Stewart said organisers want the event to gain enough backing to keep regional finals going and to help move players and teams towards next year’s Premier league.
“We are hoping that we can generate enough support behind it that we can continue having the regional finals and the players and the teams that are going to go into next year’s Premier league,” he added.
Organisers also see the competition as more than a title race, with expectations that it will support player growth, bring communities together, and help futsal spread nationally.
The championship opened with eight teams, but two did not complete the event because of unforeseen circumstances. The remaining six clubs were placed in two zones. Lucea United and Scheemaz finished as the leading teams and moved straight into the final.
“The six teams comprise two teams [each] from St James, Hanover, Trelawny. The teams are placed in two zones, and they play each other once, and the winner with the highest number of points goes on to the finals,” Stewart said.
Scheemaz coach Everett Mullings said he believes in the quality of his squad and expects them to compete strongly when they move on to the national tournament in Kingston.
“We're going to try our best in the upcoming tournament in Kingston. It’s a very talented team, and we possess the football well,” Mullings said.
Mullings said Scheemaz only began playing competitively in December 2025. He said the team still needs more training and a larger squad, noting that depth was an issue during the final.
“We need some more players [to create] depth because you can see we only have eight players today going into the finals. We will be more organised,” Mullings added, while also commending how the tournament was staged.
Scheemaz collected the championship trophy, while Dennis Lee was named Most Valuable Player.
Montego Bay Mayor Richard Vernon said he was pleased to see the competition moving towards a national format. He said he gave $100,000 from his own funds to help cover expenses for the northwest staging.
“To support the realisation of the northwest competition, I made a personal donation of 100,000 to offset costs. I am sowing a seed for the blossoming of the competition and for the furtherance of youth development across the municipality,” Vernon said.
The MoBay Futsal Championship started in 2018 and helped lead to the formation of several teams in the parish. Vernon said futsal has been growing in St James and can help connect young people and communities.
“Futsal is quickly gaining traction in St James. I believe it is a good way of connecting with youth, community, and at the same time, bridging gaps across them. This helps with keeping them meaningfully engaged, reducing turf tension and violent crimes,” he added.
Trelawny Scheemaz will next turn attention to the national competition, scheduled for June 6 in Kingston.
