Child’s body found near Troy as mob wounds two in Trelawny

Police were on scene late Tuesday after the body of a child was discovered in a Trelawny community near Troy in the south of the parish, residents said. They reported the girl’s throat had been cut and that her remains were found in bushes about 6:00 p.m., prompting an alarm.

Residents alleged the child had been raped before she was killed. A farmer searching for his hoe came upon the body, according to a resident who asked not to be named. After the discovery, a crowd attacked a man accused of the killing; his father was also hurt. Both men were taken to hospital. Their conditions were not known. Efforts to reach the police for comment later Tuesday were unsuccessful.

Separately, the body of an unidentified male washed ashore at the old wharf in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, on Tuesday morning. The deceased is believed to be a teenager seen swimming there on Monday afternoon. Residents could not say what happened later that day, when a search-and-rescue effort began. The body was found along the coastline about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Police have opened an investigation.

In Florida, Jamaican national Jaryin Shelton — also referred to as J. Manzie — is set for a Broward County jury trial beginning November 9 before Circuit Judge Bernard I. Bober in Fort Lauderdale. He has pleaded not guilty and is held without bond at the Broward Main Jail on charges tied to a fatal double shooting. Prosecutors in Jamaica have sought him as an overseas video-link witness in the triple-murder case against music producer Linval “Shap Don” Thompson and co-accused Tejay “Fathead” Clark.

That Jamaican case arises from a May 25, 2022 shooting at a birthday party on Marl Road in Rose Heights, St. James, that killed Shamario “Chippi” Calvin, Shadwell “Bomb Brain” Frazer and Tony-Ann “Two-Fly” Reid and wounded two others, including Shelton. He later left for the United States. About four months after the party attack, he was arrested in Florida over an October 19, 2022 shooting outside Blue Hill Condominiums on Blueberry Court in Lauderhill, where Dwayne Mosely Francis and Jeff Murray were found shot dead. An arrest affidavit alleges surveillance showed Shelton among men who arrived in a dark sedan, that he was wounded, fled, then returned and fired at a wounded man on the ground; blood recovered along a flight path was matched to him. Jail records describe the principal offence as murder with a depraved mind without premeditation, though related entries still cite first-degree murder counts.

Investigators have linked the Florida killings to a Montego Bay gang feud that Jamaica Constabulary Force officials, including then Deputy Superintendent Aaron Samuels in November 2022, said had spilled into South Florida. Shelton’s US case has moved slowly through status conferences and attorney changes; unless further adjourned, jury selection is due November 9.
