Tru Juice beat Humble Lion to claim Jamaica Football Championship crown

Tru Juice FC will begin life in the Jamaica Premier League with silverware already secured, after defeating Humble Lion 2-0 in Sunday’s Jamaica Football Championship final at Ferdinita Park.

Both finalists had already achieved the main prize of the season: promotion to the Jamaica Premier League. Still, the championship trophy gave the final added meaning, and Tru Juice made their intentions clear early. Dasean Neil Russell opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Daniel Roberts doubled the lead in the 35th for the Linstead, St. Catherine-based club.

Humble Lion could not find a way back after the break, allowing Tru Juice to complete the victory for coach Craig Richards. The win capped a campaign that brought a major moment not only for the club, but also for its St. Catherine supporters.

Richards said the title was an extra reward after promotion had been secured. “This is icing on the cake,” he said, adding that the team had set out to play every match in the competition and win the final one. He described the achievement as significant for Bog Walk and St. Catherine, saying the community had been chasing such a moment for a long time.

Humble Lion coach Davion McGoo said his players should take pride in their season despite the defeat. He said two errors proved costly in the final, but praised the squad for giving everything to the club across the campaign.

With the championship decided, both promoted teams now face the challenge of staying in the Premier League. Humble Lion have previous experience at that level, including relegation, while Tru Juice are preparing for their first season there.

Humble Lion president Christopher Jackson said survival will require more than on-field work. He said the most successful clubs are not always the wealthiest, but the best organised, and that Humble Lion must improve its structure before the new season. In the previous four editions of the championship, only one winner has avoided immediate relegation from the Premier League.
