US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will place a 20% charge on all cargo moving through the Strait of Hormuz, after days of intensifying military exchanges between Washington and Tehran.

He said the measures would bar Iranian vessels and their customers from using the vital oil shipping lane, while other countries would continue to enjoy open and fair passage. The blockade is due to take effect at 4:00 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday.

Tehran and Washington fell into a dispute over control of the strait after the two sides traded strikes overnight and on Monday. The United States said it hit military targets inside Iran, including air defence systems, coastal radar installations, missile positions and drone sites.

Iran said it replied by attacking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radar facilities in Oman.

In a Truth Social post on Monday, Trump maintained that the Strait of Hormuz would stay open with or without Iran.
