Trump Slaps 50% Tariff on Range of Canadian Imports

United States President Donald Trump has slapped a 50% tariff on a broad set of Canadian imports, deepening the trade friction between the two neighbours.

According to the plan, the fresh duties are set to begin within 30 days and will apply to items such as wine, hockey sticks, and various industrial goods. Key Canadian exports, including energy and critical minerals, have been left out of the measure.

The White House explained that the levies are meant to shield American companies. Canada, for its part, has branded the action an unfair trade practice.

The decision lands while the two governments are still at the negotiating table over earlier tariffs covering steel, automobiles, and additional products.
