Tuchel Defends England Tactics After Argentina’s World Cup Semifinal Comeback

2 min read

ATLANTA, Georgia: England’s attempt to preserve a narrow advantage ended in heartbreak on Wednesday as Argentina rallied late for a 2-1 World Cup semifinal win. Thomas Tuchel’s side was leading 1-0 deep into the second half, but Lionel Messi created goals for Enzo Fernández in the 85th minute and Lautaro Martínez two minutes into added time. The result sent Argentina through to face Spain in the final.

With Argentina repeatedly delivering crosses into England’s penalty area, Tuchel altered his formation and deployed five defenders. The England coach said Argentina had been winning the aerial challenges and finding too many opportunities from wide positions, even before he made any substitutions. He explained that the tactical adjustment was intended to block central openings and give his team greater strength in the air.

Tuchel acknowledged that accountability ultimately rested with him. He also said it was straightforward, after an unsuccessful outcome, to conclude that the decision had been incorrect.

The changes failed to slow Argentina’s attack or limit Messi’s influence. Opta reported that Argentina controlled 88 per cent of possession during the 38-minute period between England’s goal and Martínez’s winner.

According to Opta, England became only the second team this century to score first in a World Cup semifinal and still miss the final. England was also responsible for the other such collapse, having surrendered its advantage against Croatia in 2018.

Captain Harry Kane expressed disappointment with the room England allowed Argentina during the closing 20 minutes. He said the available space helped Messi and his teammates become increasingly assured while sending passes into threatening areas. Kane conceded that England eventually faced more pressure than they could contain.
