TVJ’s Smile Jamaica turned its World Cup build-up into an outdoor football game, bringing fathers, grandfathers and children together for a blindfold challenge before the day’s tournament coverage. The hosts reminded viewers that the previous World Cup match was played on December 18, 2022, in Qatar, and said the next World Cup action was due to begin that day, with studio coverage from noon and a 2 p.m. match featuring Mexico against South Africa in Mexico.

The segment featured participants including Dale Gate, Keith Campany and Jaden, with Madison and Jaden among the youngsters assigned to guide blindfolded adults through a cone course. The adults could not simply walk straight ahead; they had to weave in and out while following verbal directions from the children.

Before the first run, participants backed different teams, including France and Spain. One supporter shouted “vamos” for Spain, while another said France would win. Once blindfolds were raised, the children called out instructions such as forward, left, right, stop and back as the adults tried to avoid cones and stay on route.

A second group included Calvin, Karen, Malakai, Kieran and Colleen. The transcript captured some joking confusion over whether Calvin was supporting England or Portugal, while Germany was also mentioned among the favoured teams. The group repeated the course, again relying on shouted directions and quick corrections as the adults moved toward the ball.

Portugal was declared the winner at the end of the challenge, despite jokes about a missed goal and the mix-up over England and Portugal. The hosts closed the game by congratulating the participants, presenting a trophy and again pointing viewers to the World Cup coverage starting at noon, ahead of the 2 p.m. Mexico-South Africa match.
