Police fatally shoot two men after reported gunfire in St Catherine

Two men were shot dead by police in St Catherine on Sunday evening during what investigators have described as a reported confrontation with armed occupants of a vehicle.

The police said the incident began about 6:05 p.m. along the Lluidas Vale main road, where officers stopped a Honda Stream motor car.

According to the police account, the team was acting on information that one person in the vehicle was wanted for questioning in connection with last year’s killing of five people in Commodore district.

Police said the driver was instructed to pull over, and officers then got out of their service vehicle. They reported that, after the Honda’s engine was switched off, people inside the vehicle opened fire at them.

The officers said they moved for cover and fired back.

During the reported exchange of gunfire, police said three men got out of the vehicle and ran into a nearby bushy area.

Afterward, checks of the Honda were carried out, and two men were found inside with injuries that appeared to be gunshot wounds, the police said.

Investigators reported that two firearms and ammunition were recovered at the scene.

The injured men were taken to Linstead Hospital, where they were declared dead.

The Independent Commission of Investigations is investigating the incident.
