Zimbabwe beat India to claim third place in Unity Cup playoff

Zimbabwe secured third place in the Unity Cup with a 1-0 win over India at The Valley in Southeast London, as Prince Dube’s first-half penalty proved enough in a closely fought playoff.

The Warriors went ahead in the 38th minute after Manetsi was brought down in the box. Dube took responsibility from the spot and sent the India goalkeeper the wrong way, giving Zimbabwe the lead before half-time.

India, making their first appearance on English soil in more than two decades, had started with energy but struggled to turn promising attacks into clear chances. Ryan Williams, who had featured earlier in the tournament, was unavailable because of a hamstring injury, though he remained with the squad.

Zimbabwe, under coach Tembo in only his second match in charge, made one change at the interval and later introduced several substitutes who had started the semi-final defeat to Nigeria. The changes helped the Warriors regain attacking threat after India began the second half with more urgency.

India improved after the break and came close to forcing penalties. A deflected effort struck the post, while Nixon sent a header just wide after a strong delivery into the area. Late substitutions gave the Blue Tigers fresh movement in attack, but Zimbabwe’s defence held firm under pressure.

The result meant Zimbabwe ended their Unity Cup campaign with a win, following their semi-final loss to defending champions Nigeria. India, who had been beaten by Jamaica in the other semi-final, finished fourth. Nigeria and Jamaica were scheduled to meet later at the same venue in the Unity Cup final.
