Bronx court remands Jamaican man charged in niece's fatal shooting

A Bronx court has ordered that 58-year-old Jamaican national Michael Foster remain in custody without bail after he was brought before a judge on accusations that he fatally shot his niece, Julia Anderson, during a quarrel over property in New York.

Foster faced arraignment on Thursday. Bronx Assistant District Attorney Burim Namani informed the court that Anderson's death was not Foster's first serious encounter with the criminal justice system.

"What's of note is that the defendant has previously been convicted of manslaughter, for which he served a significant amount of time," Namani told the court.

According to state correctional records, Foster was found guilty of manslaughter linked to the 1988 drive-by shooting that killed Calvin Reed, who was the father of former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice. He received a prison term of four to 20 years for first-degree manslaughter.

Those same State Department of Corrections records indicate Foster was refused parole on three occasions and left prison in 1999 after seven years behind bars.

Anderson, 39 and the daughter of Jamaican parents, was gunned down in the Wakefield area of the Bronx shortly before midnight on Monday as she headed home from her job. Her uncle was later taken into custody and, on Wednesday, faced charges of murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
