US sets stricter green card process for temporary visa holders
The United States has put in place a revised immigration rule for people living in the country on temporary visas.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services says applicants who want a green card will generally have to go back to their country of origin to file, unless their case falls under exceptional circumstances.
The agency says the adjustment is meant to uphold existing immigration law and keep the visa system operating for its stated purpose.
USCIS spokesperson Zach Taylor said student, visitor and work visas were not designed to allow people to move into permanent residence while remaining in the United States.
Officials also expect the policy to help limit cases in which people stay in the country unlawfully after their request for legal status is refused.
