UWI Earthquake Unit confirms 3.9 tremor near Golden Spring on Sunday morning

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A light earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale was detected across parts of the island on Sunday morning, according to the Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies (UWI).

Early figures put the tremor at roughly 11:45 am. Residents in Kingston, St Andrew and St Catherine reported feeling the shaking.

The epicentre lay about five kilometres northeast of Golden Spring, St Andrew, at a focal depth of 12 kilometres. The Earthquake Unit classified the event as a local earthquake.

No injuries or structural damage had been reported in the immediate aftermath.

The Unit stressed that all details remain preliminary and could be revised as further information becomes available.
