Venezuela earthquake death toll reaches at least 920 as rescuers hunt survivors
The number of people killed in two earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to at least 920, with more than 3,300 others reported injured. The tremors struck within a minute of each other on Wednesday night, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. Authorities said the stronger of the two ranks as the most powerful earthquake to hit the country since 1900.
Officials believe many victims remain trapped beneath collapsed buildings, keeping pressure on emergency crews across affected areas. In Caracas, rescuers stretched thin by the scale of damage have been working to pull people from the rubble, at times using only their hands where tools and machinery cannot reach.
Support from outside the country has also been brought in to widen the search. International rescue teams, including units with sniffer dogs, have joined local efforts to locate survivors buried in debris.
