Vineyard FC captured the St Elizabeth Rum Bar Major League crown on Sunday, defeating Tafari Lions 2-0 in the final at STETHS after two late goals settled the contest.

The championship match remained scoreless until the 62nd minute, when Cordel Cunningham gave Vineyard the breakthrough. Ten minutes later, Maxwell Robinson added the second goal, confirming the title for Vineyard and finishing the campaign as the league’s leading scorer.

Vineyard’s camp praised the team’s resolve after the win, noting the players’ fight and commitment against a difficult opponent. The response after the final whistle was one of celebration, with the team’s supporters hailing a complete performance.

Tafari Lions were left to rue defensive mistakes after the defeat. Their assessment was that Vineyard reacted faster, won the key 50-50 challenges, defended strongly and also benefited from an assured display by the goalkeeper.

In the third-place playoff, New Holland beat Newcome Valley United 2-0. Shamari Johnson and Otis Wilson were the goalscorers as New Holland secured the bronze position.

St Elizabeth Football Association president Patrick Malcolm said the parish’s football programme continues to develop. He pointed to competitions at under-13, under-15 and Division One Major League levels, and said plans are also in place for under-14 and women’s competitions as the association works to lift standards and attract greater support.
