Wilton Brumley, a General Construction Level Two trainee at HEART College of Construction Services, says the institution has helped him build confidence, practical competence and a better understanding of Jamaica’s technical training pathway.

Brumley said he selected the college because of the standard of its technical instruction and the range of skills available through its construction programme. He said trainees are pushed to work hard, especially in a field that demands physical effort, discipline and persistence.

According to Brumley, instructors at the college make it clear that students are expected to complete the programme successfully. He said the message from his trainer has been that construction trainees must draw on their inner strength and keep working through difficult tasks.

During his training, Brumley said he has been exposed to several areas of building work, including block laying, masonry, steel fixing, rendering, rough casting, timber framing, painting and plastering. He said the programme has offered more depth than he initially expected.

Before enrolling, Brumley said he mainly understood HEART as a place where people could gain certification. Since joining, he said he has learned more about the assessment process, how certificates are handled and how students who stay focused can move through the programme in a timely way.

He also praised the college’s teaching approach, saying instructors take pride in developing the trainees who enrol. Brumley described his classmates as productive young people and said his instructor is highly knowledgeable in her trade.

Brumley encouraged prospective students not to delay if they are considering technical training, saying the first step is important and the opportunity is available through HEART College of Construction Services.
