West Indies lose two WTC points after slow over-rate sanction in Antigua
ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) — West Indies have been hit with a slow over-rate penalty from the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, costing the team both money and ground in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).
Emirates ICC Elite Panel Match Referee Javagal Srinath applied the sanction after determining that the hosts fell two overs short of the mandated rate, once permitted time allowances were factored in.
Each West Indies player was fined 10 per cent of his match fee. Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, a side loses five per cent of the fee for every over not completed on time, up to a ceiling of 50 per cent.
The heavier sporting cost came under Article 16.11.2 of the WTC playing conditions, which removes one championship point for each over short. That left West Indies two points lighter on the WTC table.
Captain Roston Chase pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed penalty, so the case closed without a formal hearing. On-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Ahsan Raza, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Deighton Buttler brought the charge.
