Paul Stephenson, a 51-year-old man from New Harbour Village in St Catherine, has been charged with murder after his girlfriend died following an alleged attack that first led to an assault charge.

The woman who died has been named as 29-year-old Tieah Singh, who lived in Old Paisley district, May Pen, Clarendon. Stephenson is also known as 'Pablo'.

Police say the matter began about 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, when Stephenson and Singh got into a domestic quarrel. Detectives allege that, during the confrontation, Stephenson injected Singh with a poisonous substance using a syringe, then sprayed pepper spray into her face.

Investigators further allege that after the episode, Stephenson took Singh back to her home in May Pen and left her there. She later fell ill, and a relative carried her to May Pen Hospital, where doctors admitted her in serious condition.

Stephenson was later taken into custody and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm. While Singh was being treated, she was reportedly told that the substance allegedly placed in her body was a toxic agricultural chemical.

Medical staff tried to save her, but Singh died on Thursday, June 11. After her death, detectives attached to the Old Harbour Police revised the file and laid a murder charge against Stephenson.

He is to appear in court on a date that has not yet been announced.
