ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the fatal police shooting of a man during an alleged confrontation in the Crescent district of St. Catherine early Monday morning.
According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the incident occurred at about 5:00 a.m. while officers were carrying out a targeted operation in search of wanted individuals.
Police reported that after entering a premises, they heard a sound coming from what appeared to be an abandoned motor vehicle. While investigating, officers allegedly discovered a man inside the vehicle.
The JCF said the man allegedly pointed a firearm at the officers, prompting them to open fire. He was shot and injured, and reportedly fell while clutching the weapon.
The police said a Hi-Point pistol fitted with a magazine containing four rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene.
The injured man was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The deceased has not yet been formally identified. Police described him as being of brown complexion, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a brown pullover shirt, and having a plaited hairstyle.
As is standard procedure in fatal police shootings, INDECOM has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
